LAKE ARROWHEAD YESTERDAY

I noticed that a female mallard left her male partner to watch the kids.  It wasn't too long before he lost track of one of them.

He found the other one playing in the sand up on the beach.

Seeing the dad with the kids shows how colorful the male is compared to ... are they female ducklings? Anyway, they almost look like little gold statuettes.

Hi - yes Laura - this is the male mallard - the female has pretty much all brown markings except for a little blue above the wing. The male actually soon will lose all interest in the babies. He's only around for a little bit and then off to be single again.

They begin finding partners in October and have babies in spring. Soon after the male will not be involved. I think the male does guard them for awhile.
